    Pinion gear forgings are used in a wide variety of applications. Customers typically finish machine these shafts and use them in gearboxes or transmissions.

    KDK can heat treat the pinion gears as well for increased machinability. Forged gear shafts increase strength of the gear and create less waste of material. 8620 is a common alloy steel material that pinions are forged from.

    There are a variety or gearing profiles that manufacturers use in creating a final machined gear. Pinion gears may have gear profiles on both ends of shaft. Spline gears and spiral bevel gears are examples of gear profiles that may be used. Many of KDK's customers have utilized our upset forging expertise in order to save material and increase the strength of their gears and transmissions.
